If Tekken 3 was your last game, then youd be caught off guard by environmental hazards introduced in Tekken 4, and wouldnt know what to do when your opponent slams you against a wall for big damage. But for those of us whove been playing since the beginning, its all part of the fighting games natural progression. Tekkens been building off the originals solid foundation for more than two decades, each new installment improving in incremental ways. Tekken 7 is the next satisfying step in the series evolution. In 1994 Namco released Tekken, an outstanding 3D fighting game with a loose story based on the struggle between a father and his powerful son. In 2017 Bandai Namco. The original Tekken laid the groundwork by creating a simple, intuitive fighting game system that was as easy to pick up as it was difficult to master. In Tekken 7, as in the original, each of the four controller face buttons represents a limbtwo arms, two legs. In symphony with the directional pad, those buttons generated fighting moves that felt natural, immediate and quite brutal. Its the core of the franchise, and a damn strong core at that. Tekken 7 takes all of the franchises changes and refines them further. The rage system introduced in Tekken 6 has been expanded to include rage arts, flashy supermoves that trade the increased damage of rage mode for a 3. There are also rage drives, powerful moves that grant a player frame advantage to blocks and open up new combos. Both types of moves offer good comeback potential for players finding themselves on the wrong end of their health bar. These new rage mechanics add some excitement to lopsided fights without being obnoxiously overpowered. Theres also power crushes, special moves that allow players to power through enemy attacks, ignoring high and mid attacks. These slow but strong blows are also excellent for turning the tide of battle, but theyre easily avoided by seasoned opponents. The bound system from Tekken 6, which produced some spectacular but unrealistic juggling combos as characters bounced off hard concrete into the air, has been replaced with the screw attack system. Now, characters twist sideways when landing after launched. Sidestepping has been slowed down across the board, making the game more about ducking and blocking than sliding. And combo scaling changes mean that keeping your opponent in the air longer yields diminishing returns, which makes stringing together moves more strategic. The changes made to Tekken 7s combat system all lend themselves nicely to the brutal, up close and personal battles the franchise is known for. Where other fighting games encourage players to fly to the far corners of the screen and launch screen spanning special moves, Tekken has always been more grounded. For the most part youre not going to win a fistfight from across the arena. Well, maybe if you play Akuma, a visitor from the Street Fighter franchise and one of ten new fighters participating in the latest King of Iron Fist tournament. Ive been facing off against quite a lot of Akuma players in my various online Tekken 7 battles. Ive had some issues finding opponents on the Play. Station 4 version of the game, including connections dropping before the match starts. Once I get into a battle everything runs great, from the early blows to whenever Akuma finishes wiping the floor with my poor Otaku, Lucky Chloe. It makes sense that the Street Fighter star get more play than my rather controversial favorite new combatant, as Akuma is one of the few fighters to get major play in Tekken 7s sadly lacking story mode. The story is narrated by an investigative journalist seeking to uncover the secrets of the Mishima Clan following the death of his wife and child. They were killed during a skirmish in the world spanning battle between the rival Mishima Zaibatsu and G Corporations. The story mode is a series of pitched battles that utilizes only a small handful of the games 3. As Cecilia mentioned in our early impressions of the game, story mode is beautiful but empty. The journalist is a device to tell a slightly altered version of a tale Tekken fans have played through over and over again, revealing secrets of the Mishima family that arent very shocking. Prior to release Bandai Namco touted Tekken 7 as a resolution to the conflict that began back in 1. Tekken. It delivers this resolution, but in an unsatisfying way. We have been there and done that, only now Akumas involved. Where other fighting games use story mode as a means to introduce players to the fighting mechanics and various systems, Tekken 7 feels like it really just wants to get this bit over with. It even offers simplified special moves to help players breeze through the fighting sequences. Meanwhile, the colorful cast of more interesting fighters is given short single battle vignettes that barely offer any insight into their characters. Lucky Chloes brief interaction with series mainstay Eddy Goro is little more than cute nonsense. Saudi Arabian fighter Shaheen is a heroic and honorable character whose solo story mission hints at a background much more interesting than anything I played during the three hour story mode. So many amazing new characters, so little info given. Its a bigger shame than Street Fighter Vs initial set of skimpy story mode missions. Outside of story mode, Tekken 7 doesnt have much single player content. Solo players can fight through arcade mode with various characters, which is satisfying but tedious. Treasure battles gives players a chance to fight to win cash and unlock special customization items, but otherwise its just a string of endless basic battles. The customization options in Tekken 7 are exquisite. Each character has various unlockable outfits, tops, bottoms, hats, accessories and hairdos. Going beyond costumes, Tekken 7 includes options for special particle effects, player bio card frames, title plaqueshell, players can even change the health bar that appears in battle. Dressing up your character and customizing your display are certainly things to do by yourself, but I wouldnt call them single player content. Youll want to take your custom characters online. Maybe Akuma will be laughing hard enough at the pizza strapped to your Leos back to let you get a couple of good hits in. Since the introduction of online play to home consoles, fighting games have been struggling to find a good balance between single player and multiplayer content. Some games, like the recently released Injustice 2, nail it. Tekken 7 doesnt its a competitive multiplayer fighting game with an eye for online play. From the sparse solo content, it looks like the series is tired of pretending otherwise. And thats fine. Tekken 7 is a fighting game that wants to be played against other people. Each new mechanic introduced since the series inception was created for the sake of player versus player battle. Tekken 7 review PC Gamer. Of course it should be, given that its combat model is only a slight refinement of the expansive, immediate and free flowing set up perfected some time around Tekken 3 on the Play. Station. But an improved version of a near perfect thing is nothing to be sniffed at. For the uninitiated, Tekkens combat focuses on freedom, openness, and breadth of possibility over strict, prescriptive hierarchies of attack and defence. Where other fighting games are dominated by tightly defined rules of risk and reward, Tekkenwhile consummately, thoughtfully precise and balancedprefers to give you a range of looser options in a more emergent, intricately reactive fighting system. It wants you to try things, just for the hell of it. It wants you to experiment wildly with its vast array of subtly different, malleable attacks, parries, evades and counters. Its an entirely more organic, sandbox y fighter than the competitiona fluid, unpredictable and constantly exciting game of incredibly accurate hitboxes and anything can happen cause and effect. Its logical, fair and makes total sense, but it also wants you to know that a ludicrous, woop inducing turnaround can happen at any given moment. If youre willing to put everything on the line, maybe it will. If Street Fighter is like fisticuffs chess, then Tekkens faster, more explosive, more intimate and improvisational, laterally focused game is like Geometry Wars with roundhouse kicks. Its an instinct driven feel fighter where learning the basics of a character is about exploration over academia. Although largely familiar, Tekken 7 does introduce a cool new system by way of its Rage Arts and Rage Drives. Available once your health bar gets low enough theres no managing multiple power gauges here, Tekken is much more straightforward than that, Rage will trigger, allowing you to launch one of two powerfully augmented, potentially tide turning attacks. Arts are big, cinematic super moves that will often finish your opponent, whereas Drives lean more towards powered up combo openers. The latter offer less guaranteed damage on hit unless you can follow up, but are much safer from retaliation if blocked. Whichever you go for though, Rage means that every Tekken 7 fight stays exciting right to the very last second. Unfortunately, the game seems to assume that you already know the specifics of how Tekken works, and it really couldnt care less about teaching you if you dont. Unfortunately, the game seems to assume that you already know the specifics of how Tekken works, and it really couldnt care less about teaching you if you dont. Modern polish asideand in terms of both action and looks, Tekken 7 is absurdly polishedthe singleplayer package wrapped around the jaw cracking magic is threadbare and annoyingly out of touch. While there is a training mode, it makes less effort to educate than a disinterested high school teacher who sticks on a video and catches up on marking until the bell rings. Comprising only the basics of a character specific moves list and a training dummy that can be programmed with desired behaviours, Tekken 7s training only really caters to players looking to hone the execution of known strategies. Those wishing to learn the ins and outs of the games internal logic and flow are on their own. That the moves list simply dumps the whole lotaround 8. This would be acceptable if Tekken 7 didnt squander its most promising concession to modern fighting games the tragically inconsistent story mode. This was almost perfected when Nether. Realm introduced the idea in its 2. Mortal Kombat reboot, showing that a narrative fighting game campaign can deliver a brilliantly creative, character focused in road to understanding how to play. PERFORMANCEThere is no mouse support and keyboard controls are terrible, though youd expect that of a fighting game. Look out for the 5. GB install size. The game is locked to 6. FPS and runs flawlessly on our GTX9. For a full overview of our performance impressions, check out Ians analysis. Tekken 7, however, seems to understand the basics of this but not the purpose, delivering a short, incoherent and newcomer hostile tale with a brutally disproportionate ratio of cutscenes to combat. Most maddening is that the final chapters, when it eventually zones in on a purposeful, character driven story thread and tells it through sustained, increasingly spectacular, multi stage battles, get it really right, showing off Tekken 7 as a whole with defiant class and flair. As rivalries intensify, the action is seamlessly punctuated with narrative overlays upon decisive hits, with electrifying slow mo close ups highlighting key clashes. The storys late stages feel like the adrenaline fuelled and cinematic Matrix game we never got. To get there, though, youll have to grind through two hours of simplistic, bluntly repetitive battles, as well as earnest yet meaningless chatter with who the hell is that anyway characters. On top of that, theres a faceless, morphine overdose of a narrator apparently aiming for an award worthy parody of Bad Anime Acting. Character Episodes pad things out with a great deal more, much needed personality, but damn if that doesnt just flag more wasted potential. Its unlikely youll even learn anything by accident, too. The story modes bizarre decision to furnish one button macros for key special moves more than sees to that. When Tekken 7 comes alive, it does so with a furious zest and capability. With another invested player in tow, it delivers a gratifying, hard hitting time with the winsome giddiness of a party game. And if youre willing to put in the work required to release that powerand have the friends on hand to helpthen Id recommend it, no question. If your fight buddies are thin on the ground, though, and the faceless world of online scrapping isnt for you, think carefully. Tekken 7 quickly ceases to exist for the solo player.
